Steve Harvey is a Prophet?

“The Game,” episode 5 showcased one of the main characters, Jason Pitts (Coby Bell) having a hard time managing a new relationship.  He consulted with Tasha Mack (Wendy Raquel Robinson) to get some hard-core advice about black women.  She suggested he read Steve Harvey’s best selling book “Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man.” She further edified Mr. Harvey’s successes by touting his morning radio show, game show, stand-up comedy and other ventures to seal the wax on his credibility.  She followed it up with the controversial comment, “Steve Harvey is a prophet!”

When I heard that line, I laughed for a while because you never know what’s going to come out of Tasha’s mouth. But in some weird way, I knew the subtle point she suggested in her joke.  Unfortunately, it sparked a ton of controversy on the web towards Mr. Harvey–although he had nothing to do with the statement.

Mr. Harvey has his share of haters.  Some don’t care for his comedic spin, have issues with his past, or have read or heard something negative about him. There are many who criticize Mr. Harvey by wondering who he is to give advice or furthermore, calling him a hypocrite because he talks about how good God is and may curse somewhere later in his show.   This is where I will park for a minute.

We all have morning rituals, and one of mine is listening to The Steve Harvey Morning Show.  I make it a point to be plugged in from 6:00 am-6:12 am EST every morning…even on vacation.

He starts out thanking God for his show, his blessings and his life.  He discusses a real-life issue, breaks it down so a 5th grader can understand and details how God would want us to handle it.  Sometimes he uses scripture references along with some personal stories with overtones of accountability, focus and responsibility. Whatever your walk of life is, he makes you feel comfortable and open to receive what he has to say. He intertwines some words of encouragement and wraps it up with some edification and a bold call to action.  These nuggets are powerful enough to give me fuel to start my day in a positive fashion–no matter how it starts.

As I get older, I try my best to stop judging people–especially those I don’t know personally. Celebrities unfortunately live our their drama in the public eye and don’t get the leisure of keeping their dirt under the radar–

Family Feud

like we can.  The media and blogs can say what they want about Mr. Harvey.  I am choosing to go by the experience that I have had of him:

1. His morning show reaches millions of people daily and he chose to use the first 12 minutes to connect with people who may never be exposed to the bible or these positive affirmations anywhere else.  He also continues some of the encouragement through various parts of his 4-hour show. So just for that, he’s all right with me.
2. He has mentoring programs for youth via his Boys Mentoring Weekend, Disney Dreamers Academy and various other ventures.
3. Over the years, he has cut down dramatically on the foul language in his stand-up and actually will be retiring from stand-up in the Fall of 2012.
4. A number of positive career opportunities have opened up to him over a short span of time that have allowed him to re-invent himself and provide positive experiences for people.

Personally, I believe God gave him the platform as a test.  If he fully takes on the challenge, who knows where God will take him.  I mean seriously, who in our lifetime thought we would buy water, see the “Terminator” become the “Governator,” and watch Diddy’s protege Mase become a Pastor.  Maybe Mr. Harvey is next for something supernatural?  God does use the foolish things of this world to confound the wise (1 Corinthians 1:27).

Is Mr. Harvey a prophet? I don’t know, God has the final say on that one.  But what I do know is that tomorrow morning at 6am, I’ll be getting my golden nuggets and on Saturday night, I’ll be in standing in line to see his movie “Think Like a Man” as it opens this weekend.  Hope to see you there!
